The main purpose of this study was to compare the level of understanding about the dying patient between the nurses and nursing students. The subjects were 141 students and 167 nurses of H. university in Seoul. The Survey was done 2 weeks period from Oct. 28, 1991 to Nov. 12, 1991. Winget, Yeaworth and Kapp¡¯s Questionnaire for understanding the dying person and his family were used in this survey. To determine the data, frequency, Mean, Percents, t-test and ANOVA by SPSS package were used, The finding were as follow : 1. The difference between the nurse¡¯s and student¡¯s score of understanding the dying patients was significant. (t=-3.48, p=0.001) Nurse¡¯s score of scale(89.13) was higher than student¡¯s (86.87) Average score of scale was 99 so both nurse and student¡¯s score was low level. 2. No significant difference of understanding about the dying patient¡¯s between student¡¯s class level(F=2.411, p=0.07), religion groups(F=1.329, p=0.267), clinical experience(F=1.487, p=0.208), marital status(F=0.598, p=0.44), age(F=1.19, p=0.317), education(F=2.815, p=0.063). 3. The number of nurses who have had a discussion with dying patient about death were 78.4% and the number of students were 76.67%. The number of nurses who have had experience been asked by dying patients about death were 35.9% and the number of students were 10.6%. Nurse¡¯s attendance of funerals(35.9%) were more than student¡¯s(22%). Nurse¡¯s condolence calls on(56.3%) were more than student¡¯s(34.8%). Nurse¡¯s preference to accept autopsy for them selves were(10.0%), family(10%), their patient(2.4%). Nurse¡¯s wish their family would recognize that nurses have a fatal illness were 79%. The causes were to prepare for death (35.4%). If they do not wish their family to know that they were dying were 21%, the causes were for peaceful family life(12.3%). Even if they would get a fatal illness they would have a positive way of life were 26.6%. The following conclusion was drived from the above results : 1. The score of nurse¡¯s understanding the dying patients and their family were higher than nursing students. The reason were nurses are more experienced to discuss about death with dying patients, to attending the funerals, to paying condolence calls etc. than students. 2. Most subjects did not prefer necropsy for herself(92.3%), family(91%), patients(83.3%). Therefore they need to get positive thinking about death. 3. Most subjects(89.1%) insisted that training as a health professional should have to include material on how to deal with the dying patient and his family.
